5 Tips for Working with a Temporary Recruiter in the South

Posted August 28, 2013

It looks like the trend toward using more temporary employees will continue across almost every industry, as companies deal with the still wobbly economy and increased healthcare costs. If you’ve had a bad experience using temps before, or if you want to make sure you’re getting the most bang for your buck when working with a temp agency, here are 5 tips for you!

1. Know Your Limits. Make sure to give your staffing agency an idea of your price range.  You don’t want to find a great temporary employee, then discover you don’t have the budget to bring him or her aboard.

2. Open Your Doors. Give your recruiter or staffing agency access to your team and your company culture. By letting them see how your team is structured, and how it operates, the recruiting professionals will be able to tell who is (and who is not) a good fit for your firm.

3. Share Information.  To find successful temporary help, give your recruiter or staffing firm a thorough job description. List the duties involved, the exact experience you’re looking for and any perks that might go with the job. Let them know what are must-haves and what are “nice-to-haves.”

4. Act Decisively. Once you find a great candidate, don’t wait to pull the trigger. Smart companies rehire the same good temporary employees whenever possible, so there will always be strong competition for the best ones. If you hesitate, you may lose.

5. Treat Them Right. If you bring in a great employee but treat them like they’re not important, they won’t give you their best. And they might not stay. Make sure you introduce the temporary employee by name to everyone they might be working with, show them the ropes and check in with them regularly to make sure things are going well.

But how do you know whether a staffing agency is any good? Here are three signs to look for:

  • They’re flexible. They know that what’s right for one employee might not be good for another, or that their clients’ needs may change.
  • They offer more than just temps. You want to find an agency that can offer you a full array of hiring and employment solutions.
  •  They know that, even though some work may seem unskilled, the environment it’s performed their job doesn’t end when the temp leaves their offices.
