Daily Behaviors to Help You Feel More Positive

Posted May 16, 2017

Despite our best attempts to avoid them, all of us go through difficult periods in our personal and professional lives.

Sometimes, just going through the grind of everyday life is enough to leave you feeling a little blah. It's always crucial to realize our feelings and look into the factors behind them, particularly if the feelings of discontent continue for long stretches.

On the flip side, there are many things we can do every day to stay optimistic in the face of adversity or the daily grind. Maintaining a healthful lifestyle and practicing self-care are the most critical factors when it comes to staying positive.

Getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, exercising and moderating alcohol consumption are great ways to set up a solid mental foundation for what lies ahead. Below are a few more ways to help boost or maintain your mood.

Help others

While we ought to care for ourselves, making someone else's day better can enhance your own mood too. Volunteer work can give you a feeling of purpose when you are feeling uninspired and give you some much-needed perspective.

If you can't squeeze volunteer work into your busy schedule, simply offering to help out a co-worker once a day can give you a much-needed mental boost. They'll be grateful, and helping others is a wonderful approach to take your mind off your worries.

Take a timeout

If you're flanked on all sides by pressure and pessimism during the workday, escape from it all and decompress for 15 to 20 minutes once or twice during your shift. Listen to soothing music with your headphones or go for a walk and just separate yourself from all the stress. If you are used to eating lunch at your desk and need to get away, go out for lunch.

Taking a brief mental break can make you more upbeat and effective throughout the day. Sometimes, that's all you need until you can go home and truly relax.

Incorporate healthy habits

Think about what activities cause you to feel good about yourself and work them into your daily routine. These habits might be anything from playing a musical instrument to working on little projects around your home.

Obviously, these activities will vary based on the person, but anything that calms you down and gives you satisfaction is a great way for staying optimistic when things get rough.

Draw inspiration from as many sources as possible

If you are religious, philosophical or simply open to being inspired, reading uplifting stories or quotes each day can lift your mood. So, pick up the Bible or another religious text, grab an Abraham Lincoln biography or Google ‘inspirational quotes’ and find encouragement wherever you can.
