Follow Up Questions for the Employer – Why They are Important

Posted July 19, 2013

There comes a time in every job interview when the interviewer turns to you and says, “Now, do you have any questions for me?” You’d better! And not about salary or vacation schedules—ask those later. What you need to do is impress the interviewer with questions that show your interest and attitude toward the job. Here’s how:

 1. “If I get this job, what would be my first priority when I start?”

Not only does this show you are interested in the job—and a go-getter!—it will also give you great insight into the current state of the position.

2. “In your opinion, what two or three personality traits are important for someone to do this job well?”

Asking this question benefits both sides: you’ll know whether the words they use describe you, and they’ll be thinking about the job being filled by a real person, not just a resume.

3. “How could I improve on the last person to have this position?”

Not only might this tell you why the last person left the job, it will give you tips on how to succeed at it. And it makes you look like a forward thinker!

4. “Do you like working here?”

This one might surprise your interviewers, so watch their reaction. You’re not trying to trip them up. You just want to see if you get a real smile and a positive answer, or if they seem to be struggling to act enthusiastic And interviewers usually appreciate the chance to give their opinions.

5. “Can you share any concerns you might have about me as a candidate so far?

Yes, asking this question takes guts, but it can be very helpful. Not only does it give you the chance to clear up any misunderstandings or miscommunications, but it might provide you the opportunity to share more helpful information about yourself. It also shows that you can handle constructive criticism and are eager to improve.
